Backyard Play Structures For Children

By Abby Johnson

While playing outdoors for children are great fun, but kids get bored with the same activities over time. So an outdoor play structure can revive the fun and enjoyment for the kids and the entire family. Outdoor play structures are much larger in size and come attached with scope for many activities. If you are thinking of buying an outdoor play structure for your backyard, you could make yourself familiar with what is currently available in this play item category.

At the outset, it is important to know that there are a large variety of outdoor play structures available in the market today. These are available at your local home improvement stores, toy stores or any departmental store. A lot of retail outlets usually display these structures, so you can have a first hand impression of what this new large toy will look like in your own backyard.

Over and above your local stores, a large variety of outdoor play structures are available online. You may not be able to touch these structures, but you will be provided with detailed information about each piece aided by pictures. It is interesting to note that online shops have a larger variety of such toys than the local retail outlets.

While shopping for an outdoor play structure, whether online or at the local store, you will get to see a large selection of similar structures, all referred to as outdoor play structure. As you know by now that these are larger than normal toys and include multiple activities. Generally these structures include, over and above other activities, swing sets, playhouses, sandboxes and tree forts.

YouTube Preview Image

Because it is made of durable materials like plastic or wood, sand boxes are referred to as outdoor play structures. Sandboxes are available in various sizes, so you can choose the one which fits best to your size of the backyard.

Tree forts are another great favorite with children. Unfortunately you will find it difficult to find one in your local store or even online. This is because, tree forts are enormous in size. So if your child wants a tree fort and you cant lay your hands on one, or find it difficult to make it yourself, seek the help of a professional tree fort builder.

While tree forts remain an all-time favorite with children, you may not be able to afford one or there may not be any tree on your backyard. Instead you could choose a playhouse, which is more or less similar to a tree fort except that playhouses are placed on the ground. Playhouses also are available in a variety of styles and designs and are popular with both boys and girls.

Both tree forts and playhouses are suitable for small children. However, if you want to buy something which can be your childs companion as he or she grows, a swing set could be a great option. These are usually accompanied by swings, slides, teeter totters and monkey bars. You can get metal swings but for more durability and dependability, wood swing sets are the best.

Over and above the items mentioned here, there are numerous other outdoor play structures available. Whether you buy one or make one yourself, an outdoor play structure is a source of long time joy for children. The indoors will then become boring for them.

Original Story
  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

In February of 2006, the Savarino Services Construction Corp. proposed the construction of a seven million dollar hotel on Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, New York. In order for the hotel to be built, at least five properties containing businesses and residents would have to be destroyed. It was not certain whether the properties were owned by Savarino or by the landlord Hans Mobius. The hotel was designed by Karl Frizlen of the Frizlen Group, and is planned to be a franchise of the Wyndham Hotels group.

Elmwood Avenue is known by the community as a popular shopping center, and Nancy Pollina of Don Apparel (who is “utterly against” the construction) claims it’s the only reason why students from Buffalo State College leave campus. Additionally, Michael Faust of Mondo Video said he did not want to “get kicked out of here [his video store property].”

In 1995, a Walgreens was proposed to be built on the same land, but Walgreens later withdrew its request for a variance because of pressure from the community. More recently, Pano Georgiadis tried to get the rights to demolish the Atwater House next to his restaurant on Elmwood Avenue, but was denied a permit due to the property’s historical value. He has since been an opponent to the hotel construction.

In the process of debating the hotel, it was thought that a hotel had previously existed on the proposed site, however; research done at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society had shown that no hotel had previously existed on the site.

Open Rights Group holds first conference in London

Sunday, July 25, 2010

London — The Open Rights Group, a pressure group pursuing reform of intellectual property law in the United Kingdom, held its first “ORGCon” yesterday at City University London. Approximately 100 delegates took part in six hours of panel discussions and workshops on a wide range of topics in intellectual property, discussing such subjects as “How To Talk To Your MP” and “ACTA: A Shady Business”, in what ORG billed as a “crash course in digital rights” designed to inspire campaigning on intellectual property issues.

Cory Doctorow, a fiction author and digital rights activist, led the keynote panel discussion “Thriving in the Real Digital Economy”, which opened the conference. Doctorow called for a “reframing” of the digital rights slogan “information wants to be free”. “The most important thing” about digital rights, he noted, “has nothing to do with art. We are refitting the information network with lots of control.” Digital rights management (DRM) technologies, Doctorow warns, build in limitations on how consumers exchange information and “abuse the market”. John Buckman of Magnatune followed up Doctorow’s comments, noting that DRM is “unsustainable” but that the public needed to “pressure companies into” open-source solutions.

A keynote speech by James Boyle compared the current age to the age just before application of the theories of Adam Smith and other early capitalist economists began breaking down the entrenched monopolies of mercantilism. Boyle called on the audience to come up with a “jaw droppingly simple” idea for a reformed copyright system; he gave his speech in front of a projection of the twitterfall as audience members commented on his words.

Boyle, like most of the conference, took a pro-reform but anti-piracy position, saying “It is a tragedy that an entire generation has lost the notion that breaking the law is wrong”. While several members of the Pirate Party UK, wearing matching t-shirts, attended the conference and held a fringe meeting during the last session, none spoke in the keynote sessions either as panelists or in the discussions.

Among the many workshops which comprised the last three hours of the day, Open Rights Group held a session on student groups and committed itself to establishing Open Rights Group Youth societies at universities across the United Kingdom. Young activists, such as Wikipedian Jdforrester, also dominated the “Your Shout” session in which any and all delegates could give three-minute speeches on any intellectual property subject which interested them.

The organisation hopes to host a second ORGCon in 2011.

Home of Stonehenge builders found

Tuesday, January 30, 2007

Scientists have uncovered the largest Neolithic settlement in the United Kingdom at the Durrington Walls and believe that the village was inhabited by the people who built the Stonehenge monument.

Scientists say that the village was built around 2,600 B.C., roughly when Stonehenge was believed to have been constructed, and housed over 100 people.

Inside the areas which would have been the interior of houses at the time, scientists also found outlines of what they think were beds and cupboards or dressers. Pieces of pottery and “filthy” rubbish around the site. Animal bones, arrowheads, stone tools and other relics were also discovered.

“We’ve never seen such quantities of pottery and animal bone and flint. In what were houses, we have excavated the outlines on the floors of box beds and wooden dressers or cupboards,” said Sheffield University archaeologist Mike Parker Pearson.

So far, the dig has revealed at least 8 houses roughly 14-16 feet square, but scientists say that they think there may have been at least 25 altogether.

The site was likely to have been occupied only seasonally rather than year-round and evidence suggests that a lot of “partying” went on at the location.

“The animal bones are being thrown away half-eaten. It’s what we call a feasting assemblage. This is where they went to party – you could say it was the first free festival. The rubbish isn’t your average domestic debris. There’s a lack of craft-working equipment for cleaning animal hides and no evidence for crop-processing,” added Pearson.

The Durrington Walls are approximately 2 miles from the Stonehenge site.

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005 A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.

Bob Barr wins the Libertarian Party presidential nomination

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

At the 2008 Libertarian Party National Convention in Denver, Colorado former Republican Congressman Bob Barr (GA) was nominated as the presidential candidate for the party. He served in Congress from 1995–2003.

Barr officially entered the race on May 12, two weeks before the convention amidst months of speculation. He won the nomination on the sixth ballot of the convention edging Mary Ruwart 324–276. Wayne Allyn Root was nominated as his running mate after losing on the fifth ballot and throwing his support to Barr.

Barr’s main opposition in the Libertarian race highlighted his vote in Congress in favor of the USA PATRIOT Act in 2001 following the September 11 attacks. He has since renounced the vote, and has worked to repeal the act. Barr’s candidacy was also seen by Libertarian “radicals” as an attempt by conservatives to take over the party.

Following his nomination Barr remarked that he “will not let [the Libertarian Party] down” and that it “will be a historic and positive campaign that will succeed.” To detractors who say he will take votes away from Republican candidate John McCain, Barr stated that “If Senator McCain … does not succeed in winning the presidency … it will be because Senator McCain did not present, and his party did not present, a vision, an agenda, a platform and a series of programs that actually resonated positively with the American people.” Party spokesman Andrew Davis described the situation among the electorate as “want[ing] and need[ing] another choice” and stating that “that choice is Bob Barr.”

I just ended my political career, from 15 years old to now, my political career is over, and it’s no big deal.

Barr’s nomination made former Alaskan senator Mike Gravel — who recently switched from being a Democratic candidate to a Libertarian candidate for President back on March 25, 2008 — announce he is ending his political career.

Gravel said, “I just ended my political career, from 15 years old to now, my political career is over, and it’s no big deal. I’m a writer, I’m a lecturer, I’m going to push the issues of freedom and liberty. I’m going to push those issues until the day I die.”

Concerns Of Atkins Shopping

Submitted by: Keisha Bates

When you set about the Atkins diet program, you are entering a new world of eating. And nowhere is that more apparent than at the supermarket. All of a sudden, all of your stand-by foods like macaroni and cheese, pasta and bread are no longer on your shopping list. When you buy groceries for the first few times you may think like a fish out of water. Although, with a bit of practice you’ll feel just as snug as you were with your previous shopping lists.

Successful Atkins shopping starts before you reach the shop. There are quite a few resources for shopping lists on the Internet and in Atkins books. Before you head for the shop, make a listing of the week’s recipes and then decide what you’ll want to make each meal. Ensure to purchase low snacks for in between meals.

Also, plan for changes to the meals for others in your home. You won’t be able to make totally different from meals for yourself and your loved ones for the long term. The most appropriate approach is to use the primary meat dish for your meal for the entire family and then a carbohydrate side dish for your family. For example, if your eating meatloaf you can add half a potato for the fellow members of your family.

1. In a large mixing bowl, put together the ground turkey, onion, egg, cilantro, jalapeno pepper, Dijon mustard, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper, and mix them together. In case the mixture becomes sticky, add more breadcrumbs to it.

YouTube Preview Image

2. Now shape this mixture into patties. You can decide about the size of these patties as per your liking. Coat each of these patties with olive oil so that they do not stick to the surface while they are being cooked.

3. You may fry or grill these burgers. Cook them for about 5 minutes on both sides. You may serve with mayonnaise or salad if you like.

As soon as you have made your meal arrangement for the week, its time to hit the outlet. When you arrive, purchase your protein items and produce first. This can sound very easy and care about it will not make much difference, but it will. Once you have filled your cart with all of the worthy foods, there will not be room for more.

Consider purchasing your meat by the truckloads. This will save you lots of money if you know where to get family sized packages of meat. When you buy meat in huge numbers, you can also cook it in bulk as well. Taking time a few days per week to cook meat makes it simple to follow the Atkins plan. You can cook your meat before hand and have it prepared to go when you demand it. You can purchase ground beef, chicken pieces, small steaks and even seafood by the truckloads.

Cheese, if you are able to tolerate it, can likewise be purchased in bulk. Many stores offer store-brand cheese in large bricks. You will need to make certain to read the labels before you buy any cheese. Make sure that when you eat cheese to eat some fiber (salad or raw veggies) as well. Having large blocks of your favorite cheeses available can make it easy to grab a quick snack between meals.

As you amble around the shop, stick to the outer edges. The outer aisles have the freshest food. Consider your neighborhood market. Most often the deli, the meat counter and the produce section are right along the sides of the shop with the packaged items in the aisles. This is especially important if you are in the first stages of the Atkins diet plan. You will need to stay clear of all packaged foods during induction, even though they’re low carb packaged foods. Once you add more carbohydrate grams to your daily limit, you can start to try out low packaged foods.

That results in the next important tip – read the labels! Just because an item says it is low carb, it might have hidden sugars. Do your investigative work at the grocery store so you won’t get home with goods that cause you to put on pounds.

Shopping for the Atkins diet will take a while to get used to. You’ll be navigating parts of the grocery store that you may not be accustomed with. You’ll also be purchasing items you’ve never cooked before. Still, with planning and dedication low-carb shopping will become easier. Simply remember to create a list before you go to the outlet and stay toward the outer aisles of the foodstuff. In no time at all, you’ll be an experienced low carb shopper.

Ford’s US auto sales spike, surpassing GM

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Ford Motor Company said on Tuesday that its sales in the United States rose 43% in February compared to the same period last year, as the automaker outsold rivals Toyota and General Motors.

The strength of our new products … are resonating with customers

Ford said that total sales improved to 142,285 units, compared to 141,951 units sold by GM. Additionally, Ford said that its share of the total US car market rose to 17%, up from 14% a year ago. The increase was better than analysts had predicted, and Ford’s stock rose to a five-year high in morning trading, before declining later in the day. Ford’s sales were significantly influenced by a 74% increase in fleet sales to businesses. Rental car agencies alone accounted for around 30,000 units sold. Sales to retail consumers increased only 28%.

The increases were led by sales of two sedans, the Fusion and Taurus, which rose 166.5 and 93.3% respectively, although sales of other models such as SUVs and pickup trucks also increased. Both models were significantly redesigned last year, and analysts said that improved quality from such cars were driving the increases.

Other companies also reported February sales today, nearly all reporting sales gains as well, although none as large as those of Ford. Toyota was the sole exception to the sales gains, as their sales declined 8.7%, as the company was faced with a global recall during the month that led to a temporary stoppage of production for some models.

“The strength of our new products … are resonating with customers,” said Ken Czubay, Ford’s vice president of sales and marketing. However, he believed that traditional Toyota customers were not buying rival autos, but rather awaiting the results from the recalls.
